The Social Attention and Communication Study (SACS)
Presented by Josephine Barbaro, Senior Research Fellow and Psychologist at the Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre, La Trobe Univesity, Australia. Brought to you by Autism New Zealand and Victoria University.
Early detection of autism is critical as it provides access to early intervention, improving children’s developmental outcomes and quality of life, and decreasing family stress.
Dr. Josephine Barbaro developed a developmental surveillance program for the early identification of autism known as the Social Attention and Communication Study (SACS). The SACS involves training of child health nurses to monitor children for autism at their routine, community-based health-checks between 12 and 24 months of age.
The SACS is the most accurate and sensitive method for the early identification of autism in the world, being utilised across Australia, the Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
This presentation will outline the 14 years of research behind the SACS, and how it can be implemented to facilitate the early identification of children on the autism spectrum.
It will also discuss the development of ASDetect – the world’s first evidence-based early detection mobile app for autism.
