Tilting the Seesaw for Teacher Aides provides practical strength-based strategies which support inclusion, and provides PLD to:
• Provide more effective general classroom support, to eliminate or minimise distress
• Provide additional support (e.g., behavioural or pastoral)
• Respect and accommodate language, heritage, and cultures in a multicultural environment.
Our Programme
Teacher aides can apply for professional learning that supports the development of their skills and knowledge in a way that contributes to the vision of their school or kura and the learning needs of students and ākonga. Click here for further information on the Ministry of Education website.
Course Objectives
• Adapt activities to assist students to stay on task and promote learning by using their strengths and interests
• Establish and strengthen relationships with tamariki. Adapting communication styles to suit individuals.
• Use visuals to encourage independence, participation and contribution
• Implement social stories to nurture self-esteem, provide information and help with understanding
• Understand emotional regulation and recognise expressions of distress
• Develop co-regulation strategies to diffuse situations which may cause anxiety.

HOW TO APPLY
1. Agree with your supervisor on what professional learning you wish to undertake and seek approval to apply.
2. Set up an ESL (Educator Sector Logon). Fill in the online application form.
3. The Ministry of Education receives and processes the application.
4. When your application is approved you and your principal or tumuaki will receive notification of the approval. Principals and tumuaki are asked to contact the Ministry if they do not endorse the original application.
5. Once the Ministry of Education approves your application, you can register for the Autism New Zealand PLD
6. Your school or kura sends an invoice to the Ministry for attendance time, travel and accommodation after the PLD is complete.
PAYMENT
The Ministry of Education will be invoiced $600.00 for your registration on this course by Autism NZ. When registering you will be asked to provide an email for us to send the invoice to. Please enter your own email and disregard the invoice sent along with your confirmation. less
